The leaders of Emerging Professionals, Young Architects and students from all chapters in California gather together at the annual AIACC AEP Summit which took place at Culver City, Los Angeles.  This is a forum where we exchange ideas, share struggles and successes on the programs we bring to different chapters.

Morning Session - Networking, Keynote speaker

The morning started with networking breakfast and keynote speaker Tania Van Herle, AIA sharing her 20+ years of professional "road map” in architecture, with advices to the attendees.  She shared the importance of licensure, mentorship and saying “yes” to opportunities even when the tasks seem mundane.

“The letters behind your name does not make you any smarter, but they lead you to more opportunities.” – Tania Van Herle, AIA

It is inevitable that future leaders will have to compete with the speed.  Technology has shortened the time architects have for projects.  Here is a list of some key take-away advices for future leaders in the architecture community:

1.     Show up and be present – do not rely too heavily on e-mails

2.     Say “yes” to opportunities – you never know where they will lead you

3.     Ask for help – find resources and mentors

4.     Be flexible – do not assume

5.     Good attitude – be strong and confident

6.     A dose of hard work always pays off

7.     Know yourself – be authentic

8.     Improve on listening skills, reading people and verbal communications

9.     Stand by word – follow through

10.   Write down the ‘top-5’ priority list first thing in the morning

11.   Always be open to learning – enjoy!

Afternoon Session - Keynote speakers, Best practices, Tour

The afternoon session started with Jana Itzen, AIA who is the founder of the Summit.  She explained the importance of Leadership in this profession and explaining that there is no fixed road maps  We all have to make different choices in our lives that helps molding our career path.  It is also crucial to reflect and evaluate the decisions made.  Jana has recently launched her own practice and emphasized on creating your own “brand”,

“Take a leap of faith and turn it to an adventure.” – Jana Itzen, AIA

“Architecture should raise your soul to a higher spiritual level.” – Douglas Teiger, AIA

Douglas Teiger, AIA  focused a lot on spiritual well-being in the architecture profession.  How it is very important to balance work and life in order to be ready to create.  We also did an exercise on learning to ‘trust’ your partner by pairing up and mimicking the partner’s moves seemingless.  Douglas gave us a tour of the firm’s project Platform” in Culver City, an abandoned site transformed into a beautiful urban corridor that encourage people to gather and spend time outdoors.

The other tour was by our host, Herman Miller.  A LEED Silver certified old warehouse transformed into a furniture space that showcases the latest “Living office” concept.
