Executive Director's Report

April Becerra, CAE

As we usher in the New Year and are settling back into our routine, I am enthusiastic about what 2017 will bring to the profession as well as to our chapter.  Fostering collaboration was front and center this year. This encouraged cross-committee interaction between volunteers, as well as dialogue with partner organizations.  It's a successful format that will continue.

Our chapter hit a lot of high notes last year and I’m very pleased with the outcome.  I expect this trend to continue in the coming years.  I wanted to personally thank a few people, who I have worked quite a bit with in 2016.  You are my unsung heroes who put so much time and passion into your role with AIASCV.  I thank you immensely.

  1. Brigitte Williams, AIA, Design Awards Chair. Thank you for your leadership as we planned our largest awards program in recent AIASCV history.  The exceptional quality of work submitted demonstrated the talent we possess throughout Santa Clara Valley and challenged our jurors. It was a packed ballroom with record attendance.
  2. Caroline Kwak, AIA, Home Tours Chair. Caroline took on the task of being the first chair of our Home Tours and was methodical in her research on how to plan and execute a successful home tour for the public. Even she was surprised to see how quickly it grew from year one to year two.  Attendance nearly doubled from year one to year two.  2017 is expected to be equally successful.
  3. Steve Sowa, AIA, Programs Chair. Steve has been the Chair of our Programs Committee for two years now but has been on the committee far longer.  It’s a thankless job but I’d like to publically thank Steve for his dedication, month after month in preparing our chapter meetings.  I hope the next time you see Steve, you’ll do the same.
  4. Lastly, nothing allows me to grow more as a professional association executive, than the interaction I have with my members and volunteers.  They willingly mentor me on all matters pertaining to the design/build industry.  David Regester, AIA, 2016 President of our chapter led by example and was there by my side as we worked through all the activities and issues presented to our chapter.  He's a person of high integrity and values.  I appreciate him very much and his support of advancing the professional interests of our members in Silicon Valley.  His letter to Mr. Robert Ivy, AIA of AIA did not go unnoticed.  Robert replied to us recently and thanked both David and Margaret Williams of the AIA San Mateo for their letter.  The full letter can be read in its entirety here.  Click for letter.

By no means is this an all-inclusive list of the wonderful volunteers we have and the meaningful work we have been doing. I always encourage our members to visit our website to learn what committee you might like to get involved in.  There are many active committees from the Women in Architecture, Custom Residential Architects Network, Continuing Education, our Committee on the Environment and always active, the Emerging Professionals committee.

What’s on the horizon for 2017? A small sampling of what we have planned.

  • Smart Building Tours
  • NVIDIA tour in March
  • An Evening of Interiors – a focus on interior architecture including tour, exhibits, networking. We are looking for projects to highlight for this event.

  • Knowledge Conference  & Vendor Showcase in September
  • A firm lecture from a global firm – Tentative for October

For those of you who have tirelessly committed time and energy to the success of this organization, I thank you. For the many of you who are new, I welcome you to AIASCV. I look forward to working with all of you in 2017.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with your ideas, comments or concerns.  Below are photos of some of my mentors who AIASCV is fortunate to have as volunteers.
