The power of social media has been expounded for many years now. We understand that the new version of “word of mouth” spreads exponentially via the internet and the varied social media platforms.   We continue to reach out to all of our members to deliver services via our website, email, webinars, Facebook, LinkedIn and now also Twitter - @aiascv.

However, nothing ever replaces the ability to shake a hand, exchange a business card, and acknowledge someone’s presence by saying his or her name out loud.  To never have time to come to an AIASCV meeting or other industry related, non mandatory meeting has you missing out on quality friendships that will last a lifetime as well as being in the loop on all that is going on with your community and your profession on a local level.

I recently attended my first ever Monterey Design Conference.  As an executive director, my goal in attending was to meet people and learn what issues people are most talking about.

It also afforded me the opportunity to meet more of my members, meet members of other chapters and meet industry professionals who we may partner with in the future.  What better way to meet people than at a beautiful location like the Asilomar?  To say that everyone was in a jovial mood is an understatement.  Some of the participants were simply on Cloud 9 with their excitement and thirst to learn more, experience more and meet impressive architects from around the world.

I did come away with new professional connections and a continued understanding of what is good design, smart design, sustainable design.  I appreciate the efforts of the AIA California Council and the MDC committee for all their efforts in putting on a first class event.

Now looking to 2016, I’ve been both reflective of what we’ve accomplished this year and optimistic of what we will accomplish next year. All while trying to provide quality educational opportunities in a variety of formats that meet the diverse needs and schedules of our members.  No small order but I’m going to do my best to make it happen.  If you are interested in volunteering in 2016, let me know.  I can be reached at abecerra@aiascv.org.
