This five-hour course has been prepared to refresh architects, developers and like-minded professionals working in the commercial and mixed use residential arenas. By exploring key FHA and CBC requirements in the context of common mistakes that are made, an understanding of the major requirements that impact spatial design will be obtained. Lessons from case studies in seminal residential accessibility lawsuits as well as commercial accessibility lawsuits will be explored, and methods for addressing non-compliance will be addressed. Presentation will have an emphasis on the new July 2015 Code Supplements.

Universal Design Case Studies
This seminar will provide a code update of the 2016 CBC code cycle changes, which will be enforced as of January 1, 2017.
Universal Design presentation and illustration of its principles applied in creative case studies, of inclusive and inspirational facilities. The benefits of mainstreaming Universal Design are discussed. Understanding ergonomics and the impact of our design solutions on the functionality and improvement in the quality of life for people with a wide variety of abilities. The case studies include a large indoor/outdoor museum, Frank Guerry Biodiversity Museum in Panama, Incheon International Airport and the Ed Robert’s Center that houses organizations of persons with disabilities.

Private Residence Adaptation Case Study
This training session covers the accessibility requirements for Privately funded Housing Apartments, Condominiums, Swimming Pools. The Fair Housing Act Design Manual and California Housing Accessibility requirements contained in CBC Chapter 11A and its six divisions. The presentation includes photos, drawings and graphics that illustrate the different topics covered.
The training will cover a case studies of a private residence that has been adapted to fit the needs of its owner, a person who uses a wheelchair.
